Philosophy

I have a BA with First Class Honours from the University of Western Sydney (1996), in literary theory majoring in social and political philosophy. I received my PhD from Macquarie University (Philosophy Department, 2006) with a thesis exploring the connections between Descartes’ biological mechanicism, posthumanism, and transhumanism. My articles and book chapters have appeared in various international publications (see below).

My research interests are posthumanism, transhumanism, biophilosophy and the philosophy of technology. I’m interested in the interactions between the living and the technological in the history of western philosophy and science, particularly in the application of technological analogies, metaphors and models to living things. I examine the ontological, epistemological, cultural, and political consequences that come from this. I also study ideologies of technological progress and social change, particularly in the context of the convergence between the entrepeneurial culture of Sillicon Valley and transhumanist ideology.
